Final outcomes and evaluations

Creating a Joyful feel using colour tones shape and negative space. I chose a block typeface as it works well with the structured lines of the bottom of the swings using a smart blur technique to draw out the lines of the image then overlaying it onto the image has created texture and background developing the 'Contructivalist' feel I wanted to achieve, along side a gray scaled Bitmap image of the girl to create a playful 'Pop art' idea. Taking this image forward from the sketching process has worked well for printing purposes I would use a matt print as a gloss may make the image to complex and lose the simplicity of the feeling.
My second image has used a dominance of colour to evoke the feeling of 'Joyful Energy' using a similar smart blur technique and hand drawn elements to create the detailed lines. By deleting select squares of the image I have added a playful and contemporary effect. Using a thin sans serif type to co inside with the lines of the image has worked well, moreover adding a line to the edge of the canvas naturally leads the eye through the image and to the type. Although this image does not lend itself as strongly to my aims as I would have liked I feel it ties in well with the brief, however maybe more movement needs to be added to create more of an energetic feel.
My final image uses a strong 'Pop Art' feel to convey its message using different shades of colour to create energy, strengthened by the movement of the character I have intentionally made the subject interact with the edge of the canvas to imply movement and lead the eye using the 'Rule of Thirds'. I decided to cut the type in two to re enforce the idea of continuous movement paying attention to the leading and Kerning of the type to make this effect work well. I think this is my strongest of all the ideas as it works well with my personal aims and co insides with all the outlines laid out in the brief.

Overall I feel I have achieved the criteria set out in the brief and developed a range of final outcomes that achieve the emotion I had chosen. Using new techniques such as 'smart blur', 'Bitmap', also concentrating on 'Kernings' and 'Leadings' have been important factors in my outcome using space effectively has been invaluable and research into contemporary design has brought my ideas further.

3 Illustrated ideas

Using negative space and movement as in my 'Lichtenstein' research I have developed this piece. Although Lowfi techniques will not convey the texture and minimalist style I will use if I decide to take this idea further. The type uses the negative space effectively although it needs to be more playful.

Again using dominance of image to create this idea, I have used impact to show this woman's joy on a swing. When drawing this image there was a natural line on the photo that I used to border the type. Colour will develop this piece along with Smart blur lines and an effective Bitmap technique to create texture.
Using the playful/energetic image of the otter makes this piece interesting although I don't feel I am achieving my aim. The boarders the edge of this image creating an interesting playful feel.
All of these images where created using stock images on a light box allowing me the freedom to move type and shape to create my desired effects. The images of the women work best for me although I cannot decide on one to develop my idea digitally I intend to create three image following a 'Pop art' and 'Constructivalist' trend.

Specific Research

Roy Lichtenstein

Lichtenstien uses shape and colour to  influence mood in this piece simple line and shape are used to produce movement texture is added using simple bitmap techniques. Using this influence in my work will allow me to create a simple message with vibrant interesting colours. I am interested in the use of negative space and the hierarchy of the text moreover the impact and dominance of the image.

El Lissitsky uses the dominance of colour to create a message type is also an important factor in this piece. Geometric shape and grid are present to keep with the ideas of modernism at the time.

Digital Sketches

Beginning to develop sketches into digital pieces allowed to play with the size and negative space also the application of colour within the images, before going back to auto graphic techniques to develop ideas further.

Although these ideas are simple developments of thumbnail sketches, the ideas create space for me to develop a sense of play by adding period dress to an otter, creating a playful image using the natural energy of the animal. Although the colour of the image needs to be more Joyful Yellows and warm colours create the sense of joy.

Looking at colour and space and developing the image further. Yellows to give strength to the message.

I want to create something simple and playful these initial ideas aren't working as well as id hoped. They are not conveying the message in the right way. I think I am going to look into the movement of people and 'Pop Art' to add the sense of playfulness, moreover Constructivalism to keep my idea simplistic.

Thumbnail Sketches

I started out this process by developing a contact sheet of sketches. I made sure this process was very quick concentrating on 'Joyful Energy' as my focus. At this stage I wanted to convey shape and movement to discuss my emotion I haven't yet started to think about applying colour or type to add to the ideas.

mood board

Proposal

A development of feeling through the medium of a postcard. Using lowfi and highfi techniques I intend to encompass emotion using animals/humans and shapes. Thinking about emotive colour, type meaning and negative space to inform mood. The image must have a type element so typeface can be used to dominate or create feeling to add to the visual elements to back up the image.

Outcomes:
3 - Postcard ideas
1 - final digital solution
1- process conclusion/evaluation
